CHURCH OF ST. JANEZ KRSTNIK
Old Slovenian graves that were dug near the church of St. Janez Krstnik in Zgornji Brnik, shows that at the present church’s site has already stood its predecessor in the early Middle Ages. Remains of gothic presbytery have been also identified. The church was first mentioned in the 15th century; from it only the tower and the ceiling closer, built in the outer wall presbytery, were preserved. Today's building was build in 1742, inside are three famous altars of the domestic sculptor Peter Janežič. The main one is from 1759, the side one from 1762. The oil painting in the throne of the main altar is the work of native Ivan Franket. The four church fathers frescoes at the vaults were painted by Matija Koželj. On the choir is the organ with ten registers, organist Peter Rumpel’s work.
